Resident of Duval County Receives Settlement After a Sponge was Left in Her Back

This case arises from injuries sustained by the Plaintiff after she presented to the Defendant physician for an operative procedure to remove a dorsal column stimulator system. Despite the Surgery Center’s safe-surgery checklist indicating that a sponge count had been completed before the Plaintiff exited the procedure suite, the Defendant physician and Surgical Center staff failed to ensure all surgical materials were removed. As a result, a sponge was left inside the Plaintiff’s back, remaining there for two years. The matter has since been resolved through a confidential settlement.
