Ford Issues Recall of 1.4 Million Vehicles

Massive Recall Includes SUVs and Taurus Sedans

It seems GM won’t be the only big American automaker to issue a major recall in 2014. On Thursday, May 29, 2014, Ford announced that it’s recalling approximately 1.4 million vehicles. The recall includes both sport utility vehicles and more than 200,000 of the company’s popular Taurus sedans. The recall also covered over 82,000 additional sedans in Ford’s lineup.

About the Recall

Ford, which is headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, stated that the affected SUVs, which include 915,000 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner models, are being recalled due to problems with the power steering components. According to Reuters, a loss of power steering can increase the likelihood of a crash. Ford acknowledged reports of 15 accidents caused by the power steering issue in its vehicles. The models covered by the recall were produced between 2008 and 2011.

The affected Taurus models were manufactured from 2010 to 2014 and are being recalled due to potential corrosion issues that can lead to fire. Other recalled sedans, which include Ford Fusion, Mercury, Milan, Lincoln Zephyr, and MKZ models produced between 2006 and 2011, are being recalled due to a defective floor mat that might inhibit acceleration.

Vehicle Defects Are an Ongoing Problem

This latest recall is just one in a long list of major auto recalls in recent months. Earlier in May, Ford recalled 700,000 vehicles due to software problems. This year alone, GM has recalled approximately 13.6 million vehicles for a variety of defects.
